“Maka the Tree Snail“ Book Launch
Partners In Development Foundation (PIDF) has released its seventh Hawaiian/English children’s book “Maka the Tree Snail Discovers His Worth.” Part of a series co-written by Gail Omoto, Jan Dill and Judy Dill and illustrated by Garrett Omoto, the story follows Maka, an arboreal mollusk (tree snail) endemic to Hawaiʻi, on his journey of self-acceptance and humility. The contemporary story also addresses the rapid ʻōhiʻa death fungus that has spread over 100,000 acres on Hawaiʻi Island and was just recently found on Kauaʻi.

Over 700 species of tree snails once lived throughout the upper land forests of the Hawaiian Islands. But due to habitat destruction and invasive species, there are only 25 to 40 species left today.

“’Maka the Tree Snail’ is a great book because we were able to tell a fun story that also highlights current environmental issues facing our native plants and animals,” Dill said. “We were also able to incorporate aspects of Native Hawaiian culture and values that we can pass on to our keiki for generations to come.”

PIDF is partnering with Bishop Museum for the book’s launch on October 20 at the museum’s gift shop from 10:00 A.M. to 1:15 P.M. Co-author Gail Omoto will be doing three book readings at the planetarium: 10:30 A.M., 12:30 P.M. and 1:00 P.M.
