ABOUT `IOLANI, INC.
In 1953, `IOLANI began with a dream and determination by founders Keiji and Edith Kawakami. The original shop had its modest beginning inside a small space with a dirt floor that overlooked `Iolani Palace. Years later, the factory relocated to its current location in Kaka`ako, and by 2010, opened its first retail store. Now celebrating their 65th Anniversary, what started with aloha shirts for men has now expanded to include women’s and children’s lines, accessories, and custom designs, such as uniforms for various businesses in Hawai‘i, and outfits for hula hālau. `IOLANI is operated by second and third generation members of the Kawakami ‘ohana, spearheaded by Lloyd and Carla Kawakami, with the support of their sons, Nick and Alx Kawakami, and daughter-in-law, Sarah Kawakami.

Together with their team of talented designers and tailors, ‘IOLANI continues to take their island-inspired fashions to a global audience with their own designs, as well as through collaborations with such international mega-brands as UNIQLO®, Hello Kitty, Pokémon, and more.

The new “iOi” (pronounced “E-O, E-O”) branding launched in 2017 ensures customers that they are purchasing authentic `IOLANI apparel.

The Kawakami family has also recently completed renovating their factory and retail space to create The ‘IOLANI Center which currently include tenants KoAloha Ukulele and Purvè Donut Shop. Other partners and a schedule of events, performances, and activities will be announced soon which are sure to create a new exciting hub of activity on Kona Street!
