13th Annual Hawaii Book & Music Festival | ||||||
International ukulele sensation Jake Shimabukuro, whose innovative arrangements and incomparable virtuosity continue to capture the hearts of music-lovers worldwide, will perform at the 2018 Hawai‘i Book & Music Festival on Sunday, May 6, 3:00-5:00 p.m., culminating two days of Hawaiian music and hula performances at the festival’s Main Stage venue. Ken Makuakane, a Na Hoku Hanohano Award-winning Hawaiian music producer and songwriter, together with the multi-award winning group The Pandanus Club, will perform the opening act for the concert, which is free and open to the public. The Main Stage is just one of 10 stages and pavilions that make up this year’s 13th Annual Hawai‘i Book & Music Festival, a free, family-friendly event presented by Bank of Hawaii on Saturday and Sunday, May 5 and 6, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day on the spacious grounds of Honolulu’s Frank F. Fasi Civic Grounds. The festival features 150 different events throughout the two days, with readings, presentations and book-signings by local, national and internationally published authors; music and hula performances by award-winning Hawaii artists and hula halau; storytellers, youth performers and other entertainment for the festival’s youngest audiences; the popular Bank of Hawai‘i Book Swap; and bookseller and publisher booths. Shimabukuro is stopping in Hawaii as part of his 2018 North American tour. His Hawai‘i Book & Music Festival performance will be followed by three days of concerts on Mother’s Day weekend, May 11-13, at Blue Note Hawaii in Waikiki. With no geographic or artistic boundaries to confine him, the humble, Hawaii-born Shimabukuro has amazed audiences with his arrangements of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Schubert’s “Ave Maria,” and Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” He collaborated with such luminaries as Yo-Yo Ma, Jimmy Buffett, Bette Midler, Cyndi Lauper, Jack Johnson, Ziggy Marley, Dave Koz, and Michael McDonald, and he has played with world-renowned orchestras and at prestigious venues such as the Hollywood Bowl, Lincoln Center and Sydney Opera House. Shimabukuro has topped Billboard’s World Music Chart on numerous occasions and was named in Guitar Player Magazine’s 2017 Hall of Fame Awards, alongside other “Gallery of Greats” members Jerry Douglas, Elliot Easton, and Brian Setzer. His first album of all original songs, Nashville Sessions, released last year, is one of Shimabukuro’s most adventurous, multifaceted and engaging recordings yet.
