Chaminade University's Na Kau A Hi`iaka
The Performing Arts Department of Chaminade University presents the Chaminade University Collegiate Theatre Festival July 21 through August 20, 2017 at the Richard T Mamiya Theatre and Loo Theatre (3140 Waialae Avenue, Honolulu, HI 96816). The festival is a summer theatre program featuring student producers, directors, actors, designers and technicians. This year’s theme is “Women in Theatre” featuring three plays: Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992, The Virtue in Propaganda, and Nā Kau A Hiʻiaka. All three plays were written by women exploring culturally diverse historical events from a female prospective. Chaminade is also featuring female students in every level of the production team.

Chaminade concludes the festival with its first Hawaiian Language play, Nā Kau A Hiʻiaka written and directed by the first UHM Hawaiian theatre MFA graduate, Kau'i Kaina. Nā Kau A Hiʻiaka presents the mo'olelo of Hi'iakaikapoliopele and Pelehonuamea. We follow Hi’iakaikapoliopele’s challenging journey to Kaua'i. Along the way, her adversity helps her gain the strength to rival her sister, Pelehonuamea. Each sister possesses the power to extinguish the delicate balance of fire, water and the land’s rebirth. Only a truce between these two sisters can restore the natural life cycle of the land. This legend is performed entirely in Hawaiian featuring both mele and hula. There will be evening performances and school day performances of Nā Kau A Hiʻiaka. Evening performances run August 18 & 19 at 7:30pm; and August 20 at 4pm at the Mamiya Theatre.
