Na Hula Festival, 74th Annual | ||||||
Beginning in 1941, DPR’s Nā Hula Festival has celebrated the artistry and grace of Hawai‘i’s premiere dance form – Hula. Hula is more than just a dance form. Hula directs your beliefs, traditions and values. Hula conducts your behavior and shapes who you become. A dancer breathes, eats, and sleeps hula. The 74th Annual Nā Hula Festival will be at the Queen Kapi‘olani Regional Park and Bandstand (2805 Monsarrat Avenue, Honolulu, HI 96815) on Sunday, August 3, 2014. The annual Nā Hula Festival is Hawai‘i’s longest-running annual non-competitive hula event. The schedule of performances is as follows: SUNDAY, AUGUST 3, 2014 – SCHEDULE 9:00 - 9:45 a.m. Royal Hawaiian Band 10:00 - 10:45 a.m. Nā Wahine O Ka Hula Mai Ka Pu‘uwai 11:00 - Noon Puanani Alama Hula Studio Noon - 12:20 p.m. 2014 Lei Queen & Court 12:25 - 12:55 p.m. Hālau Hula ‘O Pua ‘A‘ala Hone 1:00 - 1:30 p.m. Hula Hui O Kapunahala 1:35 - 2:05 p.m. Hālau Hula ‘O Hōkūlani (times and performers subject to change) Please bring your hāli‘i (covering, spread), mea ‘ai (food) and enjoy a beautiful, relaxing day of hula at the park. Admission is free. Other notable hula events in Hawai‘i include the: • Merrie Monarch Hula Festival (a competitive event), which began in 1964. • King Kamehameha Day Chant and Hula Competition (a competitive event), which began in 1974. • Queen Lili‘uokalani Keiki Hula Competition (a competitive event), which began in 1976. • Prince Lot Hula Festival (a noncompetitive event), which began in 1978.
